Hashimoto's Disease - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Hashimoto's disease is a disease characterized by the immune system attacking the thyroid gland. . A family history of thyroid disorders is common, with the HLADR5 gene most strongly implicated conferring a relative risk of 3 in the UK. The person may experience symptoms of hyperthyroidism at first when the thyroid may actually produce too much thyroid hormones. It is caused by a reaction of the immune system against the thyroid gland. Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. Hashimoto's disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, causes inflammation of your thyroid gland that often leads to underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Lymphocytic thyroiditis may also occur as a self-limited condition which lasts 2-6 months, resolving spontaneously, and leaving most patients with normal thyroid function. Chronic thyroiditis or Hashimoto's disease is a common thyroid gland disorder that can occur at any age, but it is most often seen in middle aged women. It is more prevalent in women than in men (8:1), and its incidence increases with age Blood tests of thyroid function are used to detect Hashimoto's disease. Patients with this form of thyroiditis sometimes exhibit so few symptoms that the disease may go unnoticed for many years, but eventually it may destroy so much thyroid tissue that hypothyroidism develops.

Many people with this disease have no symptoms. Hashimoto's Disease is often referred to as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune thyroiditis, lymphadenoid goiter, struma lymphomatosa, and chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is not uncommon. Many people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis have other endocrine disorders, such as diabetes, an underactive adrenal gland, or underactive parathyroid glands, and other autoimmune diseases, such as pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, or systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). In many cases, Hashimoto's thyroiditis usually results in hypothyroidism, although in its acute phase, it can cause a transient thyrotoxic state. Hashimoto's disease progresses slowly over a number of years and causes chronic thyroid damage, leading to a drop in thyroid hormone levels in your blood. Less commonly, Hashimoto's disease occurs with hypoparathyroidism, adrenal insufficiency, and fungal infections of the mouth and nails in a condition called type 1 polyglandular autoimmune syndrome. The thyroid gland typically becomes and the antibodies the body normally produces to protect the body and fight foreign substances such as bacteria, are found to 'attack' their own thyroid tissue. Treatment with synthetic thyroid hormone replacement medication usually is simple and effective. Natural treatment options also exist.

Causes of Hashimoto's disease

The common causes and risk factor's of Hashimoto's disease include the following:

The exact cause of Hashimoto's disease is unknown.

A reaction of the immune system against the thyroid gland.

If someone in your family has had thyroid disease, you may have an increased risk for Hashimoto's disease.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is most common among women, particularly older women, and tends to run in families.

It may rarely be associated with other endocrine disorders caused by the immune system.

A combination of factors including heredity, and age may determine your likelihood of developing the disorder.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is seen more frequently in people taking extra iodine in their diets.

Symptoms of Hashimoto's disease

Some sign and symptoms related to Hashimoto's disease are as follows:

Fatigue.

Enlarged neck or presence of goiter.

Small or atrophic thyroid gland.

Dry skin.

Joint stiffness.

Excessive sleepiness.

Dry, coarse hair.

Facial swelling.

Hair loss.

Heavy and irregular menses.

Hoarse voice.

An elevated blood cholesterol level.

Intolerance to cold.

Most often, people with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis suffer from symptoms of Hypothyroidism (fatigue, lethargy, decreased metabolic rate).

Treatment of Hashimoto's disease

Here is list of the methods for treating Hashimoto's disease:

Iron supplements.

If Hashimoto's disease causes thyroid hormone deficiency, you may need replacement therapy with thyroid hormone.

Antibiotics to fight infection.

Hormones to suppress or replace thyroid function.

Sucralfate, an ulcer medication.

Long-term prognosis is very good. Most people with the disease can be easily treated.

Cholestyramine (Questran), a medication used to lower blood cholesterol levels.

Replacement therapy with thyroid hormone is given if the hormone is deficient or may be given if there is evidence of mild thyroid failure.

Focus on Trans Fat

There's no doubt--carbohydrates have taken center stage in public discourse about dietary practices. You can't turn on the TV, open a newspaper or walk past the office water cooler these days without hearing a debate about this nutrient du jour. Recently, however, increasing attention is being given to an all but forgotten part of our diet. Move over, carbohydrates: fat is making a comeback in the headlines. More specifically, trans fat.

Of the four types of dietary fat (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans), the focus recently has been on trans fat. Abundant in margarine, shortening, packaged baked goods and French fries to name a few, trans fat is a widely used ingredient for food manufacturers because it is cheap and contributes to increased shelf life. It is listed as "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil" and "vegetable shortening" on product ingredient lists.

Hydrogenation is the process of heating an oil and passing hydrogen bubbles through it. The fat's density is increased, and food manufacturers use it frequently because it gives products a richer butter flavor. Saturated butter is much more expensive to use, so manufacturers reduce costs by using partially hydrogenated oils.

Partially hydrogenated oils, however, have a much different effect on the body than even the demonized saturated fats. We all know that we need to limit saturated fat in our diets, but specific amounts, although small, have been deemed acceptable, and even help to facilitate a variety of processes for the body. Trans fat, however, provides no positive effects whatsoever.

Studies have consistently shown that trans fat raises LDL (bad) cholesterol and lowers HDL (good) cholesterol. It contributes to clogging of the arteries and type 2 diabetes. Trans fat has also been linked to an estimated 30,000 or more premature heart disease deaths each year.

In March 2004, the Food and Drug Administration updated their website pages concerning trans fat and regulations concerning labeling laws. Although the FDA first proposed trans fat labeling in 1999, it wasn't until July 2003 that Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson announced the new trans fat ruling. Even then, the guidelines proved to be less than acceptable to health experts who were pushing for immediate regulations: the ruling gave manufacturers until January 1, 2006 to comply.

Some food manufacturers, however, have already started listing the ingredient on their nutritional labels, and the FDA has responded to these changes for consumers with trans fat info and guidance to understanding the new labels. See the FDA website at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/transfat.html#unhide).

Issues of further contention exist, most notably because the FDA is choosing not to list a % Daily Value (%DV) for trans fat. Although it admits that scientific reports show a link between trans fat and coronary heart disease, the FDA states that none of these studies have provided a specific reference value. This has enraged anti-trans fat advocates, who consider the decision not to list daily values a cop-out due to pressure from the food industry, not to insufficient evidence of harm (check out http://bantransfats.com/ for a comprehensive and excellent review of the latest trans fat advocacy issues).

Unlike the FDA's specific daily requirements for both saturated fat and cholesterol already in place, some experts feel this lack of specificity for trans fat allotment in our diet is akin to allowing the consumer to believe that any amount is acceptable. Thus, the possibility of a veritable free-for-all on trans fat consumption is feared.

The race is now on for food manufacturers to produce foods free of trans fat In April 2004, Kraft Foods announced the introduction of three new brands of the popular Oreo cookie containing zero grams of trans fat. Other manufactures will surely follow suit and it is likely that we will be seeing an explosion of trans fat-free (although not necessarily nutritious) products, particularly snack foods.

Since we have a while to wait until all manufacturers are required to change their product labels, consumers need to know how to recognize trans fat in products to reduce intake. Read every ingredient label before a product is purchased. If the list contains the words "partially hydrogenated," you know it contains trans fat. Shortening and margarine almost always contain trans fat. This knowledge is particularly important with regard to processed foods, since they usually contain a large amount of ingredients, most with long, odd looking and hard to pronounce names. For further guidance on how to avoid trans fat in products, check out Dr. Gabe Mirkin's website (http://www.drmirkin.com/nutrition/N185.html), an excellent resource on nutrition and trans fat info.

Conflicting as it may be, we'll always be inundated with media attention on the latest focus on nutrition. But we still need to be aware of the facts concerning our health. Coverage on fats was all the rage in the 80's, for the last decade all we've heard about is carbs. What's next? Well, there's always protein.

Changing The Way...We Heal Panic and Anxiety

Has any of this ever happened to you?
Maybe you have found yourself in the hospital’s ER because you thought you were having a heart attack, only to be told later it was anxiety?
Do you ever fear you might stop breathing because your chest feels tight and your breathing is erratic?
When you drive, do you fear the idea of getting stuck in traffic, on a bridge, or at a red light?
Do you ever feel afraid you might lose control or go insane?
Have you struggled with anxious, intrusive thoughts?
Do you ever feel uncomfortable in enclosed spaces such as supermarkets, cinemas, public transport, or even sitting at the hairdresser’s?
Do you fear socializing because you might get anxious and have to leave in a hurry? What will they think, right?

I know how you feel because I have been there too!
I know you fear that this problem will get worse, and you fear you might eventually lose control.

I know you feel anxious doing very simple things like standing in a queue, driving or even leaving your home.

I know you have tried other treatments and traditional ‘coping’ exercises that did not work.

I also know most people in your life don’t get it. They wonder why you are so anxious all the time and wish you would just ‘snap out of it.’

Nursing Education The Importance Of Critical Thinking

In the nursing profession, more now than ever, the ability to think critically is essential. The responsibilities of a Registered Nurse have increased over the years. In correlation with this increase in responsibility comes the additional increase in educational prerequisites and core requisites required to achieve a degree in Nursing. The ANA (American Nursing Association) Standards has set forth the framework necessary for critical thinking in the application of the “nursing process". The nursing process is the tool by which all nurses can equally become proficient at critical thinking. The nursing process contains the following criteria:

1. Assessment

2. Diagnosis

3. Planning

4. Implementation

5. Evaluation

It is in the application of each of these processes that the nurse may become proficient at critical thinking. It is important to look at the components that describe critical thinking in nursing, The table below lists components that define the critical thinking process. There is much more that goes into critical thinking than what is listed in the table. The table is a rough draft of the process.

CRITICAL THINKING COMPONENTS

Entails purposeful, informed, outcome focused thinking, that requires careful identification of specific problems and other physiological and psychological factors that affect the clients position on the health and wellness continuum.

The process is driven by the client, the client’s family and other health team members who are also collaborating in ensuring essential client care.

Specific educational knowledge base and level of experience in applying that knowledge in client care. (Nursing School to graduate nurse to experienced nurse) As the level of experience of the nurse increases so will the scientific knowledge base that the nurse applies.

Proficiency in the application of the institutions standards, policies and procedures.

Application of the humanistic standards of caring in conjunction with the nursing process, to holistically treat the clients response to an actual or perceived illness.

Constant evaluation and re-evaluation of the nursing process to determine the clients level of wellness

Nurses learn critical thinking via application with experience. Experience is the best teacher. But it is equally important to know that the process is being applied correctly. Many institutions will ensure that this pathway is followed by enlisting new nurses in a eight to ten week orientation program. During this time the new nurse will learn about the polices and procedures of that institution and what type of documentation is used for charting purposes. Also, the new nurse will have an experienced mentor who they will follow and who will evaluate their performance as well.

Documentation is an essential part of the critical thinking process for the nurse. Every institution places emphasis on documentation. It is said, “that if it is not documented, then it was not done". Since the nursing process is a scientific process. In scientific research, all things are documented. In this documentation, researches can look back to see if the results were due to interventions and whether or not the interventions were successful or have to be altered. The documentation process helps the nurse accomplish the same goals. Many times procedures are used that have unproven efficacy.

In it is this framework of critical thinking and documentation that such procedures can be either continued or eliminated, depending on the efficacy of the research. In other words, does the procedure actually improve, help or otherwise jeopardize the client’s health. An example of the critical thinking process and scientific reasoning is in the efficacy of taking a rectal temperature of new born infants. Currently, this procedure is still widely accepted. However the scientific approach is to ask the following, is the procedure safe, is it necessary, and can an axillary temp be used in place of the rectal temp? In answering these questions, the nurse can better evaluate whether the efficacy of taking a rectal temp on a infant should be continued.

This is just one example of how the critical thinking process is used within the nursing profession. The scientific approach using critical thinking helps the nurse develop evidence based practice. It is through “evidence based practice" that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) rates the performance of hospitals. Further research is still continuing in delineating the intricacies of the nursing process and the integration of critical thinking. All health care professionals are encouraged to pursue this type of research in their practice to ensure the quality of client care and enhance the validity of their profession.

Herbal Formula Replaces Conventional Medicine For Diabetics

Diabetes has afflicted my life physically, emotionally and spiritually for the last sixteen years of my life. My wife of twelve years and daughter has had to live with an abnormal functioning husband and father. As the years went by as a diabetic, it became more and more difficult to control my blood sugar levels. My diet had to consist of a lot of calories because I have a fast metabolism and twenty pounds underweight. The increasing periods of uncontrolled blood sugar interfered with my thought processes at work and especially with my family.

The most detrimental effect of high blood sugar happened when I had to be hospitalized during the birth of my only daughter. My wife was hurt because it appeared that I purposely used the excuse of diabetes to not want to be with her for my daughter’s birth. It seemed I could never get close to anyone because I was living in a world of dysfunctional blood sugar all the time. I woke up in the morning with high blood sugar and grouchy. During the day it was a guessing game to keep my blood sugar at a normal level. I was always just getting by with life and never fully enjoying anything, not even a close relationship with God.

As the years went by, I became desperate and would buy a lot of products to help me try to manage my disease with no results. I could not afford health insurance and Doctor’s visits. This would always get me into trouble with my wife because we would fight about me not trusting God for the answer and wasting money. The people that would sell me products were out to take my money and take up too much of my personal time which took me away from my family.

One late evening after work, I vented my frustrations on a forum for diabetics. A response came back from Dr. Joseph Khoo from Singapore. Dr. Khoo approached me as a brother in Christ and offered me an herbal formula called Combetic on the honor system. I began taking Combetic with Dr. Khoo calling me on the phone everyday to make sure I was safely controlling my blood sugar. Having a new friend caring about me meant more to me than the remedy of my condition. After three days on Combetic, we had results and my hope grew by each passing week. I continued to decrease my insulin and I became an easier husband and father to live with. I could think better and I felt as though a fog had lifted off of me. My wife and I thanked God she had a husband to love. Dr. Khoo needed distributors for Combetic so we agreed to help as a team. Dr. Khoo visited us a few months later and we formed a corporation to market Combetic called Third Day Resources. We are now a growing team to help diabetics get freedom from the imprisonment diabetes causes. Diabetics can now go to: http://www.thirddayresources.com to get informed about diabetes and order Combetic. Dr. Khoo and professional staff offers free consultation in order to provide safe effective advice for every diabetic needing freedom from the “prison” of high blood sugar so they can get back to their lives and their families.

Living with a Latex Allergy

The interesting thing about latex is that it is a huge part of our society, often without being noticed. For example, carpet backing, pencil erasers, baby pacifiers, wheelchair tires, toys, balloons, and even elastic in clothing is latex. However, most people relate latex to adhesive tape used in hospitals, which is yet another example. Because so many people have latex allergy and the number of things made from latex is growing, symptoms are on the rise.

Take the healthcare industry for example – this particular area is surrounded by latex in the form of tape, surgical gloves, disposable syringes, and blood pressure cuffs. Because doctor’s offices, clinics, and hospitals use so much latex, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have released results of a study that show a minimum of 12% of all healthcare workers eventually deal with some level of latex allergy. Even so, the biggest concern regarding latex allergy relates to children with disability since their small, sick bodies are highly sensitive and susceptible, putting them at greater risk.

Keep in mind that when it comes to latex allergy, there are many different forms of reaction, some minor and some major. For instance, a Type 1 latex allergy is considered as hypersensitive, which produces symptoms ranging from minor such as watery eyes and a runny nose to more severe problems that would include nausea and vomiting, hives, and shortness of breath. With Type 1, the problem is that latex particles become airborne and then inhaled.

For Type 4 latex allergy, the reaction is limited to any exposed area. This would include someone having surgery and the bandages being held on by latex tape. The result is a skin rash and irritation, swelling, and redness that typically lasts anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Obviously, this type of latex allergy is not nearly as serious although it is quite frustrating.

Keep in mind that latex is actually a natural product that comes from a rubber tree’s sap. Because it is so flexible, strong, and costs very little to manufacture, it takes first place over many similar manmade products. If you suspect that you have a latex allergy, you can see your doctor for a thorough examination and blood work. This test involves looking at a certain antibody called IgE immunoassays, which is performed through skin testing.

This particular test is currently being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and while it is highly accurate for proving latex allergy, it is not designed to determine the severity of the allergy. Therefore, in addition to the testing, if you have reaction to latex, you should avoid using it, turning instead to vinyl or plastic.

Dates Good Diabetics

Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the glucose metabolism is influenced, causing the level of glucose in blood to increase. Glucose can be found in the urine too in patients who suffer of this emotions. The accumulation of glucose in blood is due to an insufficient secretion of insulin or by a malfunction of the insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and its role is to take the glucose from the blood and make it enter the cells of the body which use it for producing energy.

Come visit us right here for more info on Diabetes Kidney Disease. We are the greatest source of info on Diabetes Info.
http://diabetes-info.org/

If the glucose metabolism is influenced the body gives signals to the brain which should increase hunger and so more food will be eaten. This way the glucose level in blood will increase more rapidly causing toxic products to appear ( ketones ). If these products are not discovered soon they'll cause diabetic ketoacidosis which is a potentially terminal condition.

Treatment of diabetes is focused on lowering the level of glucose in the blood and on shielding the patient from the effects this illness causes.

Diabetes is split into three types : type one, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

The first 2 types are chronic emotion and the 3rd one vanishes after the birth is done.

Type 1 is known to happen in childhood and was named as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The pancreas is not ready to produce the insulin any more as the cells responsible to this process have been destroyed by the body. These patients require insulin injections permanently .

diabetes type 2, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus happens often during adulthood. In this situation the insulin is not produced in acceptable quantities or it isn't effective on the body cells.

Type 1 isn't as regular as type two is. In 1995 there were known to be 430,700 Australians who suffered of diabetes. 19% of them were influenced by diabetes type1. The rest were thought to be mostly type two diabetic patients. These days scientists believe that for every diagnosed type 2, there's one other undiagnosed type 2 patient.

In some cases diabetes is a consequence of a misuse of certain drugs, or a result of a different tenderness like : endocrine illnesses, pancreatic sicknesses, contagions, genetic illnesses, and misusage of gear and chemicals.

The treatment will help the patient control the level of glucose in blood and ameliorate the symptoms ; the doctor will also help the patient letting him know what he's permitted to eat and what he must avoid ; will advise him what to do when he feels ill and will let him know where he will procure his diabetes supplies.

How to Protect Your Heart and the Cardiovascular System

You should really take better care of your health, and the good news is that you can do it in more ways than one. Protecting your heart and the cardiovascular system is particularly important. You can get effective results by using a few essential rules. In fact, you do not have to do anything special in order to get the desired results. Quite the opposite, you can protect yourself from getting a heart attack or a stroke as well as from type 2 diabetes.

The right nutrition is the key to cardiovascular health. You can include a number of beneficial foods in your diet that can protect you from high cholesterol. There are foods that can effectively reduce the amount of cholesterol that has already built up. You can change your nutrition to have foods that can provide for the lowering of blood pressure. There are foods that can protect you from getting diabetes as well. Black beans contain nutrients that can help you in all three of these diseases. Almonds can effectively reduce the cholesterol levels and prevent diabetes. Oranges are great for the reduction of high blood pressure as well for the improvement of the blood vessels. Fish such as tuna and salmon that contain omega-3 fatty acids are also extremely beneficial for the heart and can prevent arrhythmia.

Exercising is another important factor for the protection of the cardiovascular system. By being physically active you improve the functioning of the heart and provide for the optimal blood flow in your body. Also, it has been proven that exercising can effectively allow for the reduction of cholesterol levels. You can choose to do any sport from jogging to swimming, but even walking for 30 minutes every day will do a great job too.

It has been scientifically proven that the way we feel affects our cardiovascular health. People who experience constant stress and the ones suffering from anxiety attacks and chronic depression are more likely to get heart disease. On the other hand, recent studies reveal that individuals who are happy have a lower chance of suffering from these. Thus, you should try to get as much rest as possible, avoid worrying and do enjoyable things more often.

Symptoms of Cataracts and the Solutions

If you have cloudy vision, or perhaps see things in a fuzzy or blurry haze you may be joining the large percentage of people in the UK suffering from the symptoms of cataracts. There are many people who do not notice that they have cataracts until their vision is affected.
• Double vision
• Filmy vision
• Fuzziness, cloudiness or blurring
• Loss of vision
• Less vibrant vision
• Spotty vision
• Light sensitivity
These can have a huge impact on your life, but thankfully there are eye treatments which can solve all of these problems and even remove the cataracts all together. Even if you do not have cataracts you can solve many visual conditions with lens replacement surgery. This will then prevent you from joining the large proportion of over fifties who have cataracts.
Who is at Risk of Contracting Cataracts
Basically cataracts can affect anyone, in fact 77 percent of over seventies have cataracts and a large proportion of these notice the effects in their fifties. Some people have a higher risk than others, such as …
• People who have certain medical conditions such as diabetes
• If you have had too much exposure to UV light
• Anyone who has had a sustained injury to their eye
• Drinkers
• Smokers
• People with high blood pressure or hypertension
• Members of the family with cataracts in their medical history
Possible Eye Treatments
Lens replacement is one of the best treatments available. You can find many specialist hospitals up and down the UK, or visit Birmingham eye hospital if you live around Central England. Cataract removal surgery can be undertaken which replaces your natural lens with the perfect intraocular lens which can, at the same time, solve other eye problems such as long or short sightedness. Glasses and contact lenses can correct some of the early symptoms however only cataract removal surgery will be able to get rid of the problem for good.
The procedure
The good news is that the procedure does not take long and does not require a general anaesthetic. Instead the anaesthetic is administered in the simple form of eye drops. Once you are ready the surgeon will work to remove the cataracts and replace your lens with a specially designed intraocular lens.
The type of lens you have will depend on the problems you have with your eye sight. There are even lenses which are able to help astigmatism so if you have been told you cannot have laser eye surgery, this may be a viable option for you.
Each eye requires about twenty minutes for the lenses to be replaced, and you may feel ready to leave the hospital an hour after the treatment has finished. There is no need to stay in overnight, although you can remain in the hospital until you are comfortable and confident to go home.
What to Expect the Following Day
Once you are home it is a good idea to just rest and have a good sleep. When you wake up the following day your eyes should feel a lot more comfortable. The only difference is you will not have any of the symptoms of cataracts and your vision should be greatly improved. There will be no need for those glasses or contact lenses thanks to the replaced lens. So reaching for your appropriate eyewear each morning is a habit that you will need to break.
Problems and Treatments
As with all medical operations, eye treatments such as this do come with a certain amount of risk, however adverse reactions are not common. At the first consultation where the specialist will examine your eyes you will be given a lot of information regarding the treatment and possible side effects.
The most common problem is suffering from sore or red eyes for a couple of days after the treatment. This can be easily dealt with and you may be prescribed with antibiotic eye drops which also have an anti inflammatory ingredient. You are free to contact the hospital after the operation if you have any concerns.
On some occasions clouding of the vision may be experienced a few months after the lens and cataracts have been removed. This can be corrected with a simple laser treatment, as can any problems involving the fine tuning of your new intraocular lenses.
Eye treatments are available which will completely eliminate the symptoms of cataracts. For people living in Central England you can make an appointment at the Birmingham eye hospital, alternatively there are other hospitals in the UK where this amazing treatment can be undertaken.

Natural Mood Enhancer Supplements

5 HTP, GABA and St. Johns Wort Mood Enhancers

What is 5 HTP Mood Enhancer? The Griffonia Extract is rich in 5-HydroxyTryptophan (5-HTP), which comes from an African vegetable, the Griffonia simplicifolia seed, and contains 30% 5–HTP. 5-HTP is an amino acid that is a direct precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter having pain soothing and relaxing effects. 5-HTP is not present in significant amounts in a typical diet. The human body manufactures 5-HTP from L-tryptophan, a natural amino acid found in most dietary proteins. However, eating food that contains L-tryptophan does not significantly increase 5-HTP levels.

5-HTP mood enhancer is the precursor to serotonin. It improves mood, anxiety and is beneficial in weight loss. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. There is a massive amount of evidence that suggests that low serotonin levels are a common consequence of modern living. The lifestyle and dietary practices of many people living in this stress-filled era results in lowered levels of serotonin within the brain. Read more about 5 HTP Mood Enhancer supplements, click here.

What is GABA? A non-essential amino acid found mainly in the human brain and eyes. It is considered an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which means it regulates brain and nerve cell activity by inhibiting the number of neurons firing in the brain. GABA is referred to as the "brain's natural calming agent". By inhibiting over-stimulation of the brain, GABA may help promote relaxation and ease nervous tension.

GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid, discovered in 1950, is the most important and widespread inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Excitation in the brain must be balanced with inhibition. Too much excitation can lead to restlessness, irritability, insomnia, and even seizures. GABA is able to induce relaxation, analgesia, and sleep. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are known to stimulate GABA receptors, and hence induce relaxation. Several neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, sleep disorders, and Parkinson’s disease are affected by this neurotransmitter.

What is St Johns Wort Mood Enhancer? Extracts of Hypericum perforatum L. (St John's wort) are now successfully competing for status as a standard antidepressant therapy. Because of this, great effort has been devoted to identifying the active antidepressant compounds in the extract. From a phytochemical point of view, St John's wort is one of the best-investigated medicinal plants. Researchers in Europe have studied St John's Wort for decades. They discovered a combination of elements in the plant, foremost of which is "hypericin", react with specific chemicals in the brain to temper emotional discomfort, lift depression, and calm the nerves. Working very much like the common synthetic prescription antidepressants (maprotiline hydrochloride and imipramine), natural extracts from St. John's Wort have shown to relax and soothe the psyche with minimal side effects.

Menopause Symptoms, Diet, Exercises, Weight Gain: Tips to Sail through Menopause with Ease!

Menopause literally means the last menstrual period. It generally occurs in mid-life, that is around the age of 40. It is characterized by hormonal changes. Menstrual cycle stops and so does the production of some hormones like estrogen. Menopausal women often experiences weight gain along with weakening of bones.

Post menopause, women have have higher risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases because of the inherent hormonal changes. Hot flushes with sudden bouts of sweating are commonly felt by women. Other Symptoms being failing eyesight, hair loss, weak bones, dry skin and erratic sleep patterns. The key to staying youthful and active even after menopause is to follow regular exercise routine and a nutritious diet.

Regular Exercise Routine:

Going in for an exercise program which addresses the entire body is always beneficial. Even exercises like walking, swimming, jogging, dancing are useful. To get a complete cardio workout, involve yourself in some aerobic exercise. You can also hit a gym for some weight training which will increase your strength. Training with dumbbells at home, but under guidance, can serve the purpose for you. It is important to stretch and relax too. Relaxation helps you overcome depression related to menopause. Exercise will also combat weight gain which a women generally experiences during menopause. Yoga is the most effective way to work out. it not only keeps your body active but also keeps your mind stress-free.

Balanced Diet:

Other important issue to handle the most difficult stage for women is to eat a balanced diet with little add-ons. Diet should be particularly high in Calcium and Phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring compounds, similar to estrogens, found in plants. Phytoestrogens can be easily found in soya and tofu. Diet high in phytoestrogens reduces the hot flush by 40%. This is the reason why Japanese women face less severe menopausal symptoms than their western counterparts. Recommended amount: 10-15g of tofu or 2 cups of soya milk. Dairy products, which are high in Calcium, also reduces bone loss to great extent. Recommended amount: 1000gm. Since Vitamin D promotes the consumption of calcium, it is essential to provide enough amount of vitamin D to body. Normal exposure to sun should provide the body with right amount of vitamin D.

--> Learn more about balanced diet here at http://www.weightloss-health.com/balanced_diet.htm

Since drop in estrogen can lead to weight gain, it is wise to undertake some weight loss program to avoid complexities later in life such as diabetes, joint pains, heart-related diseases.

It is also believed that some vitamins are beneficial, specially during perimenopause. For eg Vitamin E relieves hot flushes, Vitamin B2 alleviates perimenopausal headaches, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 help fight depression.

Tip: If you find having sex uncomfortable due to thinning and drying of vaginal lining, use a water based lubricant.

About Your Profuse Sweating - The Good, The Bad And The Downright Ugly

Copyright (c) 2010 Lynsey Carter

There a number of very good reasons why some people suffer from excessive or profuse sweating. If you too suffer from excessive sweating or profuse sweating, then you probably suffer from a condition known as hyperhidrosis. And this condition can be either - good, bad, or just downright ugly. The worst part of this condition is that you probably can't help having hyperhidrosis, but you can do something to alleviate it.

The Good - Sweating, profuse or not, should be used as a positive. If you don't sweat then you may be already dead. No, seriously though, you sweat so that your body doesn't overheat. It is a normal, spontaneous function of your body. Your profuse sweating could be a reaction to something as simple as wearing too many clothes for the local environment you are in, or more seriously, it could be hereditary.

You have to realize that some people do, and will, always sweat more than others do. By doing either physical labor or just some strenuous exercise, your profuse sweating is produced so that your body has the opportunity to cool down. To assist in this process, you do need to make sure that your hydration level is maintained properly, that is, drink lots of fluids, and you should be okay. And, as a bonus, any toxins excreted in your sweat will only help to increase the overall condition of your physical health.

The Bad - Your condition of profuse sweating, or excessive sweating, may even be brought on by something more serious, such as an infection. These could range anywhere from -

* pneumonia; through to

* endocarditis.

These conditions are quite serious and you will require immediate medical attention. Other instances of your profuse sweating condition could be symptons of perhaps a stroke or even a heart attack. You should never ignore these warnings if you feel you suffer from these symptoms. See your doctor pronto.

(( Pneumonia - is a inflammatory condition of the lung. Pneumonia is a common illness which occurs in all age groups, and is a leading cause of death among the elderly and people who are chronically and terminally ill. Additionally, it is the leading cause of death in children under five years old worldwide.

Endocarditis is an inflammation of the inner layer of the heart, the endocardium. It usually involves the heart valves (native or prosthetic valves).- thanks Wikipedia ))

There can also be other diseases, some of them life-threatening, such as -

* hypoglycemia ( or hypoglycæmia is the medical term for a state produced by a lower than normal level of blood glucose. The term literally means "under-sweet blood" ) - Wikipedia;

* autoimmune diseases or disorders - ( autoimmunity is where there is the failure of an organism to recognize its own constituent parts as self, which allows an immune response against its own cells and tissues. Any disease that results from such an aberrant immune response is termed an autoimmune disease. Prominent examples include - Coeliac disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 , systemic lupus erythematosus , Sjögren's syndrome, Churg-Strauss Syndrome, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and rheumatoid arthritis too) - Wikipedia;

* some cancers - (( medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood )) - Wikipedia;

and these diseases all have profuse sweating as a possible symptom. As I said above, if you have concerns about your profuse sweating, see your medical professional.

The Downright Ugly - Do you enjoy having dark sweat stains showing under your arms? With it carries implications of either nervousness or even uncleanliness. It is not a good look or something that is endearing to your partner. If you do just happen to be unclean, try showering more than once a week! If you happen to be a nervous person then you probably will have excessive underarm sweating as a symptom of the condition that you suffer from.

If you do suffer from nervousness, then you may be suffering from a social disorder, or an anxiety disorder. These disorders could very well contribute to your profuse sweating, and you may need to seek professional assistance to work through your social anxieties. There is no shame in seeking assistance to cure yourself.

Always be aware that your profuse sweating or your excessive sweating could be the precursor to a condition more sinister than your sweating. Always let your doctor know what you are going to try when it comes to getting rid of your excessive sweating.

There are thousands of people who have learned how 14 days to stop sweating has already cured them of

their trauma from sweating overload. So take back control of your life as mentioned in this article. All you have to do is to GO HERE - http://www.14daystostopsweating.com ...NOW!

LIVE LONGER USING A WATER IONIZER

Strong Alkaline Water for better Health

THE ACID ALKALINE BALANCE - A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

There are 2 numbers related to your body that are vital:

1. Your body temperature must be maintained at 98.6 °F or 37 °C. This is why when it is hot outside, often times we will shiver or conversely when it’s cold, we sweat. This keeps your body temperature within a narrow, safe range.

2. You blood pH level must be maintained at 7.36. The blood is the basic source of everything, carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. If this number was to fluctuate by only 1 or 2 points, you would be dead because it would literally change your chemistry. Think of it like a stove, if you unplug it from the power source there is no power and it won’t function. Similarly, it would be as if someone ‘unplugged’ all your organs, cells, everything!

What does a pH of 7.36 mean?

PH measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Is the balance between positively charged ions, which are acid forming and negatively charged ions, which are alkaline forming. The pH scale ranges from 0, being pure acid to 14, being pure alkaline. At a pH of 7 the solution is neutral which means the water contains equal amounts of positive or acid forming ions and negative or alkaline forming ions. If, for example, the pH is 6.2 it would mean the solution is acidic and there are more positive ions (acidic forming ions) than negative ions. Our body pH sits at 7.36, which is slightly alkaline.

ACID and ALKALINE FOODS

A healthy diet should consist of 75-80% alkaline foods and 20-25% acidic foods. The pH scale is a logarithmic scale which means it generally takes 20 parts alkalinity to balance 1 part acid. There are different degrees of alkalinity and acidity so this number may fluctuate slightly. However, using a cup of coffee as an example, we would need 20 cups of i.e. alkaline water to neutralize the acid created by the coffee. The chart below details alkaline and acidic foods.

Note: A foods acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself i.e. lemons are very acidic however are alkaline forming in the body.

If we eat an imbalanced diet that is high in acidic foods like caffeine, animal protein and sugar it disrupts our pH. This forces our body to utilize its alkaline reserves or buffers such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium in order to neutralize the acid and remove from it from the body. As our alkaline reserves are depleted in order to neutralize excess acid, they leave the body in a compromised condition.

You may not be overweight but “over-acid”.

If there is too much acid in your system your body will hold onto the weight in order to protect it.

Have you ever noticed that some people tend to shrink when they get older? This is entirely preventable. When you live an acid lifestyle and have depleted your alkaline reserves, the body moves the acid from the bloodstream into the fat stores of the body. This is a survival mechanism the body takes to get the acid away from the vital organs.

However, your body needs calcium and if you have depleted your alkaline reserves from the blood to neutralize the acid, it will leech calcium from your bones. If it does this continuously your bones will get weaker and weaker and you will lose mass. People shrink because they have too much acid in their system.

Over-acidity is very common in today’s world because of our lifestyle and diet. More and more doctors and nutritionalists believe the diseases rampant in our society are a result of an acid-alkaline imbalance.

An acidic body can result in:

- Cardiovascular damage - Weight gain/ obesity

- Diabetes - Premature aging

- Osteoporosis - Weak bones and hip fractures

- Kidney stones - Joint pains/ sore muscles

- Candida - Low energy

“A recent seven-year study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, on 9,000 women showed that those who have chronic acidosis are at greater risk for bone loss than those who have normal pH levels. The scientists who carried out this experiment believe that many of the hip fractures prevalent among middle-aged women are connected to high acidity caused by a diet rich in animal foods and low in vegetables. This is because the body borrows calcium from the bones in order to balance pH”.

- American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

WHY AM I ACIDIC?

Diet is probably the biggest reason. Many of us eat and drink high acid producing foods such as animal products and soft drinks and don’t eat and drink enough alkaline producing foods such as fresh vegetables. On top of that, we eat many processed foods like sugar, refined carbohydrates and cooked oils and drink acid producing beverages such as coffee, alcohol and soft drinks. Artificial sweeteners, such as NutraSweet, Equal and Aspartame are an ingredient in many products and are extremely acidic.

Symptoms of Excess Acid:

- Arthritis - Headaches

- Indigestion - Low Energy

- Congestion - Hives

- Brittle nails - Frequent Colds, Flu, Infections

- dry skin, dandruff - Stressed and Irritable

- Muscle aches/ pains - Leg Cramps

HOW TO GET BACK IN BALANCE USING A WATER IONIZER

Reestablishing an acid alkaline balance begins with proper diet and nutrition. Only when the pH is balanced is your body able to properly assimilate vitamins and minerals. Our body is slightly alkaline and is made up of 70% water, so our diet should reflect this.

Alkalize and Energize!

Cleanse. Balance your pH by super- hydrating your system, drinking 3-4 liters of alkaline drinks a day. This could include green drinks and ionized, alkaline water. Water is a critical factor in establishing and maintaining a healthy acid alkaline balance.

On average a person should drink ½ their weight in ounces of water per day. For example, a person weighing 150 pounds should drink 75 oz per day, which is the equivalent to about, 9-10 glasses of water per day (assuming an 8 oz glass).

The quality of the water you drink is as important as the quantity of water you drink.

Ideally the water you drink should be alkaline water with a pH of 9-10. Alkaline water is LIVING WATER and is more easily absorbed into your body tissues. As such, alkaline water will help neutralize acids and remove any toxins from the body.

A water ionizer converts tap water into strong alkaline water with a high pH. A water ionizer is a small appliance that sits on your kitchen counter or can be mounted under the sink. A special attachment redirects tap water from the faucet to the water ionizer through a plastic hose. Once in the water ionizer, the water is filtered through activated charcoal, removing common pollutants found in municipal water. From there it goes into a chamber equipped with platinum coated titanium electrodes, where electrolysis takes place. During this process the water ionizer splits the water into 2 flows, alkaline water and acidic water, both offering incredible benefits. The alkaline water comes out of the faucet in the sink - ready to drink! A separate hose coming from the water ionizer releases acidic (oxidized) water. This acidic water is excellent for sterilizing, washing hands, treating minor wounds and burns and insect bits. It destroys over 99% of bacteria, including E-Coli.

Alkaline water has antiaging properties and can help the body resist and fight disease.

Improve your health using a water ionizer and drinking more water.

The Benefits Of A Low Glycemic Level Diet

The United States is facing a health crisis. 31% of adults are obese, as are 15% of adolescents and children with no sign that this trend will be shifting any time in the near future. What’s more, diabetes affects a staggering 18.2 million people in America, which is over six percent of the population. Even more shocking is the fact that this number increases each year. In short, the prognosis for many Americans’ health is not good.

So what can you do about it? The best thing you can do is to take care of yourself and your children through proper diet and exercise. Obesity can be eliminated and diabetes can be managed, if not all together avoided. You can control the things you put into your body, and from a chemical perspective, regulating bloods sugar levels is the most effective way to release your energy and fat burning capacity.

The Glycemic index is a system that ranks foods by how they affect your levels of blood sugar. By following a low Glycemic diet, you can control the dramatic rises in blood sugar that pose serious threats to your health. Adhering to this nutritional plan is not as complicated or difficult as you might think. In fact, finding recipes and tips is as easy as logging on to your computer.

There are a number of websites targeted for people living with diabetes to help control blood sugar levels naturally. For a comprehensive listing of sites that assist you in managing your Glycemic level, take a quick look at Review Place. It has reviews of sites like Glycemic Impact Diet, living with diabetes Plan, Diabetic and Dieting Recipes and Hypoglycemia Low Sugar Plan. These aren’t fad diets that make little sense and achieve only short-term results. The plans are based on scientific fact.

The beauty of these sites dealing with low Glycemic diets, is that they essentially do all of the work for you. They not only give recipes and health tips, but many go so far as to offer prepared grocery lists to print on the go. Even better, the recipes are not only healthy, but also tasty. You don’t feel as though you are missing out on delicious food, you are enjoying delicious, healthy food.

For example, Glycemic Impact Diet, also known as the GI Diet, a member of the eDiets family, is a healthy nutrition plan you can follow for life. It balances unrefined complex carbohydrates with lean protein and healthy fat to help you stabilize blood sugars and increase energy while losing weight. You can feel fuller longer and avoid nasty sugar highs and lows.

A Low Glycemic Level Diet makes sense for anyone. It is not just for individuals with diabetes, but any person concerned with health and proper nutrition. If, as a nation, we all paid closer attention to the Glycemic index and monitored or blood sugar intake, we would see a sharp decline in the incidence of diabetes and obesity. In turn, we’d experience healthier lives and a better quality of life.

Some Disadvantage Of Eating Organic

There are very few disadvantages to eating Organic Foods, but when looking to make a lifestyle change, you need to have all the information up front in order for you to make an informed decision, and so, here are the few disadvantages of switching to Organic Foods.

One of the few disadvantages to eating organic foods is the cost. Do you know how much most organic foods costs? If not, you may first want to examine those costs before you make the decision to switch to organic foods. There is nothing worse than being blindsided or surprised with the cost of organic foods. After a close look, you'll see that organic foods do cost a little bit more money, but that increase in cost can add up overtime.

Although the cost of organic food may turn you and other hopeful eaters away, it's also important to know that there are multiple ways in which you can go about saving money. For example, you can search for organic food sales at your local natural food stores or supermarkets. You stock up when you see those sales or choose to shop at a store that's known for their everyday low prices on organic foods. Organic food coupons can also be used, these coupons can be found online, with a quick internet search, in stores, and in weekend newspapers.

In addition to costs, another disadvantage to eating organically is the limited selection of products that some individuals are faced with. Luckily, not everyone is faced with this organic food eating disadvantage. Often times, those who live in small cities and towns find it the hardest to buy organic foods. With that being said, it doesn't matter whether you live in a small town or a huge city, there are still a number of different ways that you can go about buying organic foods.

A great way to buy organic foods if you live in a small town is by going directly to the source, organic farmers. This is great way to get your organic fruits and vegetables, as many small towns now have organic farmers. You can also search for specialty organic food stores by using online business directories, your local phone book, or by asking those that you know for recommendations. The internet can also be used to shop online.

As previously stated, you can shop online to buy organic foods, but it's also important to know that there are a number of cons or downsides to doing so. This is mostly due in part to the requirements of shopping online. For example, a computer and internet connection is required to shop online. Many online shoppers also need to pay for shipping costs. Speaking of payments, most online food stores only accept credit or specific debit cards, namely those that can be processed as credit cards.

Although there are a number of disadvantages to eating organic foods, it's also important to remember the benefits or advantages to doing so as well. For starters, organic foods are all natural and safe to eat. There is no having to worry about potentially harmful chemicals, additives, and pesticides. Organic foods are also helping the environment and the economy.

Zinc: Deficiency Symptoms and Health Benefits

Zinc is an important mineral, which is essential for protein synthesis and helps to regulate the production of cells in the body's immune system. It is mainly found in the muscles. Zinc is also found in high concentrations in red and white blood cells, the retina of the eye, bones, skin, kidneys, liver, and pancreas. In men, the prostate gland and semen (zinc is one of its constituents) store high amounts of zinc.

More than 300 enzymes in the human body require zinc for normal functioning. It is believed that around 3000 out of the 100,000 proteins involved in human life contain zinc. Our body contains about 2-3g of zinc.

Many organs of the body secrete zinc, including the pancreas, the salivary gland, and the prostate gland. Immune cells also secrete zinc.

Benefits of zinc -

# Zinc is vital to many biological functions such as immune resistance, digestion, reproduction, physical growth, diabetes control, appetite, stress level, taste and smell.

# It helps maintain normal taste and sense of smell, aids in wound healing, promotes normal foetal growth and boosts immunity. By boosting the immune system, zinc also helps protect against fungal infections and various infectious disorders, such as conjunctivitis and pneumonia.

# Zinc functions as an antioxidant and is involved in many decisive biochemical reactions, including enzymatic function, carbohydrate metabolism and protein synthesis.

# It plays an important role as a component of many enzymes regulating cell growth, DNA and protein synthesis, energy metabolism, regulation of gene transcription, hormonal levels in the body etc.

# It is required for fighting skin problems such as acne, boils and sore throats.

# It is also used as an astringent and an antiseptic for skin protection.

# Zinc is especially important for the prostate gland in males, and protects it from early damage that could lead to cancer.

# Zinc also promotes normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence (sexual development).

What foods are rich sources of zinc?

High-protein foods contain high amounts of zinc. Good food sources for vegetarian people include dairy products (milk, curd, yoghurt), beans and lentils, peanuts, peanut butter, seeds, fortified breakfast cereals, and wholegrain cereals. Pumpkin seeds are considered to be one of the most concentrated vegetarian dietary sources of zinc.

Dietary fibre (phytates, found in cereals, legumes) can interfere with the body's ability to absorb zinc. Zinc is best absorbed by the body when taken with a meal that contains protein.

Red meat and poultry also provide good sources of zinc. Zinc absorption is greater from a diet high in animal protein than a diet rich in plant proteins. Thus, fruits and vegetables are not good sources of zinc.

Cooking helps reduce the adverse effects of both phytic acid and dietary fibre on zinc absorption.

Is excess zinc harmful?

Too much zinc can be harmful to the human body. Excessive absorption of zinc into the human body can lead to reduced iron function, and damage the immune system. The major adverse outcome of long-term consumption of excessive zinc is copper deficiency, along with stomachache, nausea, mouth irritation, and a bad taste.

Deficiency of zinc -

Zinc deficiency most often occurs when intake of zinc is inadequate or there is poor absorption by the body, or when there is increased excretion of zinc from the body, or when the body's requirement for zinc increases.

Zinc is excreted through the faeces, urine, hair, skin, sweat, semen and during menstruation. Liver and pancreatic disorders, chronic alcoholism, diabetes mellitus, and absorption disorders lead to zinc deficiency.

Men should always make sure of sufficient quantity of zinc in their diets, since the health of their prostate gland is linked to zinc. Zinc is needed to manufacture testosterone and a shortage may induce a low sperm count, loss of libido.

Signs of zinc deficiency:

Symptoms of zinc deficiency include hair loss, skin eruptions, diarrohea, degradation of body tissues, and, eventually death also.

Since a person's vision, taste, smell and memory are all connected with proper levels of zinc in the body - a deficiency in zinc causes faulty working of these organs. Deficiency of zinc may lead to poor night vision, falling hair, white spots under fingernails, skin problems, sleep disturbances, reduced wound-healing, decreased appetite, a decrease in the sense of taste and smell, a reduced ability to fight infections, and poor development of reproductive organs.

Zinc deficiency can also lead to immune system dysfunction and stunted growth, impaired male fertility along with hormonal disbalance. Women may experience irregular menstrual periods, while males may have slow sexual maturity.

Zinc deficiency is common in people infected with the HIV virus or suffering from AIDS.

Zinc levels are also low in people with diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes.

People with anorexia and bulimia are often deficient in zinc.

Children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) tend to have lower blood zinc levels.

Diet Plans And Menus - The Beverly Hills Diet

The Beverly Hills Diet is also called the Hollywood Diet because of the number of movie stars who have followed it over the years. This diet lasts 4 to 6 weeks; it may provide you with a whopping 400 calories a day. If such a drastically strict number doesn't set off danger signals, I don't know what will. The diet's first phase lasts three weeks. During the initial week you only eat fruit and must absolutely respect the selected foods for the given day. This is a detoxification week. During the next two weeks you will progressively reintegrate foods. The second phase lasts two weeks and leads to a balanced diet. The final phase lasts one week. You are even allowed pizza and popcorn but don't overdo it. Here are some of the principles.

Respect the given menus, to the letter. During Phase 1 every day has its own specified food or fruits. For example, the very first day of the diet you are allowed pineapple and two bananas. On the third day of week three you eat zucchini in the morning, green beans and mushrooms at noon, and broccoli or cauliflower at supper. Phase 2 is also very well defined. For example, you start your day with two tablespoons of untreated bran and an unsweetened hot drink. Then wait 45 minutes for breakfast. You will need a book to get the full list of foods, day by day.

Despite its name the Hollywood Diet has no advantages, except for some people the fact that they are following the stars. This diet should not be undertaken by those suffering from diabetes, ulcers, or colon spasms. Others who should stay away include pregnant and breastfeeding women. There is a definite danger of fainting, muscular weakness, and nervousness.

Here are two sample menus:

Menu 1 (Week 2, Day 5)

Breakfast: Pineapple.

Lunch: Pineapple.

Supper: Special salad. Potatoes.

Menu 2 (Week 6, Day 6)

Breakfast: A mango.

The mid-morning snack is an apple.

Lunch: Two persimmons.

Supper: Tomato and basil salad. Grilled steak. Ratatouille. A piece of goat's milk cheese.

Some of the information in this article comes from a fascinating new book, La Bible des Regimes, written by Jenny de Jonquieres and published by Amerik Media. Her book describes more than 80 diets and weight reduction programs. Each diet is presented with 5 menu plans, a detailed discussion of its advantages and disadvantages, and lots more. La Bible des Regimes is presently available only in French.
